There are many places that offer students the chance to get back into work with distance learning degrees. One of these places is Kaplan University, an online university that offers its students the chance to sign up to and graduate with degrees that will set them up for professional jobs in the real world. Kaplan University has, for over fifty years, been one of the top places in the world to do distance learning courses. It is affiliated with the very highly respected University of Essex, so it has clear grounding behind it with professional lecturers, and resources to rival any of the top campus based universities in the country. When students graduate from Kaplan they collect their degrees alongside students from the University of Essex.
Having a distance learning degree from Kaplan University will mean that a graduate is equipped to go into the job market armed with professional skills that they might not have been able to pick up had they followed a degree scheme at a more traditional or longer established university. Degrees that Kaplan offers are focused on three main areas: business management, the law and legal system, and the financial services. To add to its reputation as a top provider of professional learning, Kaplan University has been nationally recognised for the quality of learning that its accountancy courses offer to students.
Within these broad subject headings are degrees in management and leadership, marketing, policing, probation, youth justice and a large number of other things. Degrees that are this specific are designed for people who know exactly which area they want to be working in, because these qualifications will clearly lead them right into a job in this sector. For students who do not have the minimum requirements of C grade GCSEs in English and maths and one A-Level, Kaplan offers the chance for them to do a foundation degree, with a one year BA ‘top up’ at the end.’

Google Apps for Education is having a good week. Yesterday, public schools in Iowa and Colorado got onboard, and today, a representative of Brown University made another announcement. By popular demand, Brown faculty, staff, medical, and grad students are all “going Google.”

Geoff Greene, Director of IT Support Services at Brown, noted in a guest post on the Official Google Enterprise Blog, “About a year ago we put our 6,000 undergraduate students on Google Apps. The results were phenomenal: people were happy, they were productive, they were excited . . . and then some people got jealous.”

So a migration is taking place this summer that will allow everyone else with ties to Brown to use Google Apps before long. And a lot of folks are excited about that, as the video below shows. As for the rest, Greene wrote, “We feel confident that once people start using these tools together, they’ll never look back.”

Also, on a more tangible subject, Greene estimated that the change will save Brown something like $1 million per year.

This development should serve as a very strong endorsement of Google Apps when other colleges consider adopting the technology, then. Or for that matter, considering how well-regarded Brown is, this seems likely to convert quite a few schools even if they weren’t already thinking about adopting Google Apps.

Bachelor’s Degrees in Telecommunications

A bachelor’s degree program in telecommunications explores the broadcasting and communication of data, video and voice through phones, computers and other media technology. Depending on the school and concentration chosen, study may focus on either telecommunications technology or mass media such as TV and film. A bachelor’s degree program can be completed in four years.

Most telecommunications bachelor’s programs do not have specific prerequisites for admission. Some programs may include courses that can be completed online.

Program Coursework

The curriculum in a telecommunications bachelor’s program will depend on whether its focus is in media or technology. Media-oriented programs feature classes in subjects such as television production and scriptwriting. Programs in telecommunications technology may include courses in data networks and data traffic. Both concentrations can offer internship opportunities. Other possible courses include the following:

History of journalism

Group psychology

Information technology

Art criticism

Signals systems

Popular Career Options

Undergraduate education in telecommunications can lead to employment in an array of industries, like entertainment, broadcasting and journalism. Those studying telecommunications media can prepare for jobs such as:

Copy editor

Media buyer

News writer

Research analyst

Newscaster

Computer network and telecommunications technology students can find installation, repair or management jobs in phone, satellite or other broadcasting companies. Graduates who focused on computers can work as network administrators or technicians in corporate information technology departments.

Teaching classes online is different from teaching traditional classes in several important ways. Class preparation and the material that is presented is often significantly different, as is student-teacher interaction. Depending on the institution, grading completed work may also be more challenging.

Syllabus and Classwork Preparation

Depending on the collge, online classes must often have their entire course curriculum written and available before the class ever starts. This is especially true for courses that are more student-controlled and allow students to work at their own pace. Teachers of this sort of class must, almost without exception, have all class material prepared and ready for students before the course ever begins.

In more traditionally-scheduled courses, teachers may have the option of writing the course curriculum as the semester progresses, drawing on the textbook and class progress to draw the class to a closing point as the semester draws to a close and modifying the work as necessary to fit the circumstances.

Teacher Availability and Student Interaction

In online classes, teachers are not required to be in class at any particular time, but must make themselves available to student questions on a consistant basis throughout each day to insure that students have a consistant resource for learning. This interaction may occur via email, instant messenger or some other asynchronous form of communication, and may be more demanding, as questions must be either answered many times over or the teacher must post answers for the whole class to pertinent questions. Teachers must also monitor student interaction via forums and message boards to ensure that students are participating in the class and understand the material that is being presented.

Grading and Assignment Completion

Online classes may have many different types of turn-in requirements for assignments. Some require students to turn in their assignments periodically throughout the semester, just as traditional classes do. Others have more flexible assignment dates, and because of these varying schedules, teachers must often be prepared to grade a great deal of material all at once at the end of a semester. Online classes may also be easier to grade, however, as some assignments are presented via a software interface that allows teachers to assign answers as they create the problems, therefore saving themselves the work of later grading. source: education-portal.com/articles/

Technology jobs are becoming increasingly popular and with more and more competition for jobs, candidates need to find a way of making their application stand out. One way to enhance your CV is by gaining work experience. Like with other industries, work experience is essential if you want to improve your chances of being shortlisted for an interview.

Where possible use your current job although admittedly this is not applicable to all positions. You might work in a warehouse but be the one everyone turns to when there’s problem with the computer system, if this is the case put this on your CV. Where possible, get your boss to recognise your work, it might be worth asking if there are training courses you could be put on which on your CV would show your commitment to the industry.

Look into work placements. Temporary work placements or training schemes are a great way of gaining an insight into specific job roles and the general sector. Work placements range in length, they can be for a week or for as long as a couple of months. Although placements are often unpaid, some companies pay expenses, but either way it is better to have some experience on your CV than none.

If you have some training it might be worth exploring intern programmes. Many big companies offer internships and they sometimes lead to full- time positions within the company. They are usually aimed at university graduates, so there is a lot of competition for entry positions, but don’t let this put you off.

The information on your CV is the first and employer learns of you, so use the space wisely. Make sure your technical expertise is included on your CV, that way employers can quickly determine how much you know about different programs and applications. Employers can spend as little as 30 seconds reviewing a CV so make yours detailed but concise and easy to follow.

Are you looking for a new challenge? Are you finding yourself scanning through the vacancies listed in online recruitment agencies and the trade magazines with a little more interest than usual? Looking out for a step up the career ladder, some fresh professional development opportunities, some new skills and of course the improved pay packet that comes with growing your skill-set and your responsibilities? You may well be perfectly comfortable with your existing position and that may be the problem. It’s time for a change of gear, to break out of the comfort zone.

You may feel disenchanted where you are, let down, unsupported and desperate to make a move. Whatever the reasons if you really want to make the most of this opportunity for change then you need you get yourself mentally prepared for the job-seeking task ahead. You need to adopt the sort of positive yet realistic mindset to not only give you a strong chance of landing the new position you want, but to also give you an edge over your competition.

One of the most important processes of finding your new job will inevitably be the interview. If you know how to perform strongly in an interview environment then you can really enhance your prospects

The first thing that must be understood about any job interview is that it’s a two-way street. Not only is it an important opportunity for a prospective employer to asses you, it’s also your opportunity to determine whether the vacancy meets your requirements. It will help you make that crucial decision as to whether you and the position are a good fit.

In order to have as clear an idea as possible it’s your responsibility to do your homework, and to make sure that you have as much relevant information and insight on both the company and the position as possible.

Develop a thorough understanding of each company, the people you will be meeting, the company’s history, its ethos and what they do, how they conduct their business and where they plan to go in the future. Of course, you can only find out so much online or through their literature or by talking with people. The real information will come in the interview. By doing your research though, you start to build a picture and identify the areas where you need more information. Your research informs the questions that you need you ask in interview. Questions that will impress your interviewers and not only shed light on whether the position is suitable for you, but also questions that will put you at the front of the applicant queue.

Whether you are applying for a new job through employment agencies, say healthcare recruitment agencies or specialist hr recruitment agencies, or even going direct, the same principle applies. You want to be the one at the front of the field, the person who comes over as best prepared, best able and the safest pair of hands to take on the vacancy. Whether you end up accepting the job offer is another matter all together.

So what are the sorts of areas you should be looking at, the sorts of questions that you need to be asking to assess the role and whether it’s something you would like to pursue?

Make sure you read the second part of this two part guide to find exactly the sorts of things you should be asking about to help land you that hot job offer.

If you enjoy helping people or want a job with flexible hours, where no two days are the same, then working in retail may be for you.

The retail sector is one of the most varied areas in which you could choose to work. Careers in retail offer a number of opportunities, with many companies having fast track management schemes offering quick career progression.

There are many misconceptions about working in retail such as low pay or needing lots of experience, but this isn’t actually true. Retailers offer a wide range of salaries, but worker’s pay always meets the National Minimum Wage. As with any job previous experience is an advantage, but a positive attitude to work, the ability to communicate well with people and enthusiasm about what you do is also an important factor.

Retail recruitment is done in a number of different ways, often shops advertise their vacancies in their window or on their website, whereas other positions are advertised through recruitment agencies.

There are many advantages to working in the retail. There are excellent opportunities, you may start of as a member of staff on the shop floor, but retailers have a range of training options which offer different career choices. Working in retailed is varied, not all positions are in company stores, some positions are based in company offices.

The retail industry is flexible and many jobs do not require you to work the standard 9.00 until 5.00. If you do work in a store, you are more likely to do shifts which could start at the beginning, end or middle of the day.
